Is your baby struggling with feeding? Whether your infant was recently discharged from the NICU or is showing signs of feeding difficulty at home, a comprehensive infant feeding evaluation can help uncover the root of the problem and provide a clear path forward. At Infant Feeding Specialists, we offer evidence-based, family-centered assessments to support safe, functional, and nurturing feeding experiences—at the breast, bottle, spoon, or cup.
This comprehensive appointment will include a review of your child’s medical history, past feeding experiences, an oral motor and/or neurobehavioral examination; as well as a feeding assessment in order to appropriately identify any underlying issues.
This evaluation is appropriate for preterm or term infants (under 12 months of age) who demonstrate feeding difficulties at the breast, on bottles, spoons, straws and/or cups. Or infants who are tube-fed with the goal to begin or progress to full oral feeding.
We offer parents a safe, judgement-free zone to express their concerns about their infants' difficulties. Our empathetic approach ensures parents feel comfortable partnering with us to create appropriate feeding plans for their infants. So expect a warm and compassionate specialist who will first listen, then share their knowledge and expertise with you. We will work with your infant in a calm, developmentally appropriate way, while respecting their limits, ensuring medical excellence and following Best Practices.
Many of the babies we evaluate are NICU graduates or preterm infants who face challenges such as:

- Feeding aversions or oral sensory issues
- Weak oral-motor function
- Vomiting or Reflux
- Frequent coughing or choking during feeds
- Poor weight gain despite feeding effort
- Discomfort during feedings
- Difficulty transitioning from feeding tubes
Our goal is to provide early intervention to avoid long-term feeding disorders.

What is involved in an infant feeding evaluation?
A comprehensive assessment of your baby's feeding abilities, including observation of feeding behaviors, evaluation of oral-motor skills, and identification of any swallowing difficulties.
Who conducts the feeding evaluations?
Our evaluations are performed by speech language pathologists (SLP) and occupational therapists (OT) who are also Certified Neonatal Therapists (CNT). Most of us are also Certified Lactation Consultants (CLC/IBCLC). We all have extensive experience working with infants in the NICU and at home.
What’s the difference between an Infant Feeding Evaluation and a lactation consult?
A lactation consult typically supports goals directed towards breastfeeding and milk supply after birth. An Infant Feeding Evaluation has a wider view that includes breastfeeding and milk supply, but also looks at oral motor control, swallowing safety, self-regulation and neurodevelopment. We use a “whole child” approach and provide information so that all of your infant’s systems can work synergistically : brain development, sleep health, oral feedings, positioning and motor movements, weight gain and parental bonding. Because we recognize that all of these factors have a significant effect on your infant’s comfort and success.
When should I consider a feeding evaluation for my infant?
If your baby exhibits signs such as discomfort during feeds, prolonged feeding times, coughing during feeds, poor weight gain, or difficulty latching, an evaluation is recommended.
Are these evaluations covered by insurance?
At this time we are not participating with health insurance companies. However, many insurance plans cover feeding evaluations and will reimburse you. We’re happy to provide a superbill for you to submit for possible out-of-network benefits.
Not sure if you have coverage? Use Reimbursify to find out if you have coverage for our services.
We also accept FSA and HSA payments.
What happens after the evaluation?
Based on the findings, a personalized therapy plan is developed to address your baby's specific feeding challenges. You will have two weeks of communication with your specialist through our "chat" feature on our secure patient portal. Some infants may be recommended to have follow-up appointments in order to address all the goals
What if I am also getting feeding therapy through my hospital or the state's early intervention program?
You can still seek our support. We are happy to collaborate with your current team to ensure you and your baby receive the best care to optimize this important time of growth and development.
